Pretty well all the lodges are associated with and some are owned and run by commercial safari firms. Although one can embark on an independent tour of a region, bear in mind that travelling conditions and access can be difficult, and that it’s a lot less troublesome, often cheaper and generally more rewarding to invest in an organized package excursion. The safari operator will know the area intimately, can provide a comforting degree of personal service, and will make sure that you extract the very most from your bush holiday. Moreover, packages invariably take in more than one lodge and sometimes more than one region, so offering the kind of environmental variety that would be difficult to experience if you were going it alone and had limited time at your disposal.

The mobile safari A number of commercial operators run mobile safaris, which, as their name suggests, involve organized treks through the wilderness – on foot or by four-wheel-drive, boat, on horseback or by some other means of locomotion (including, in one notable instance, by elephant) – as a member of a conducted party. Many of these operations cater for those with special interests – for bird-lovers, keen photographers, amateur botanists, sporting anglers and so forth. One camps out in the bush, or at a public park campsite, or overnights at one or more of the permanent venues. Generally speaking, this kind of expedition is less expensive than the more static lodge safari, though costs vary a lot from one to another: at one end of the scale are operators who pamper their guests; at the other, trailists are expected to rough it, and to help with the chores.
